SERIES AND MESSAGE OVERVIEW
Springboarding off of the Apostle Paul’s life focus, clearly expressed in 1 Corinthians 2:2, Pastor Greg launched an “open-ended” message series on January 12th, 2020 – focusing on “Just Jesus.” He is walking us through the entire New Testament, pulling passages from the Old Testament for context, and keep us focused throughout the year on “Just Jesus.” This week Pastor G delivers part 38 of his “Just Jesus” series.
Pastor G closes out some of his teachings on faith and healing from the last several messages. He shares a healing story from his own personal life, says a little more about why the Prosperity Gospel teachings are UNbiblical and talks about a profound example of NONhealing/healing in the life of the Apostle Paul.
Pastor G then moves on to teach on Matthew 8:18-20, where Jesus and the disciples head for a boat to spend some time away from the crowds. On the way, Jesus is approached by a scribe who says he wants to become a follower but Jesus encourages him to count the cost and reveals something about Himself to those who are listening.
Nowhere in Scripture are we promised that God will give us everything and anything we want in life as long as we just have enough faith. That’s a heretical teaching that cannot be found in the Bible. In fact, Jesus promised us the exact opposite.
…In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. ~ John 16:33b
As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. ~ Isaiah 55:9
Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me—to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong. ~ 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
Now when Jesus saw a crowd around Him, He gave orders to depart to the other side of the sea. ~ Matthew 8:18
Then a scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” ~ Matthew 8:19-20
James and John asked to sit at Jesus’ left hand and right hand in glory with a similar attitude to that of the Scribe.
But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” ~ Mark 10:38
