Springboarding off of the Apostle Paul’s life focus, clearly expressed in 1 Corinthians 2:2, Pastor Greg launched an “open-ended” message series on January 12th, 2020 – focusing on “Just Jesus.” He is walking us through the entire New Testament, pulling passages from the Old Testament for context, and keep us focused throughout the year on “Just Jesus.” This week he covers Matthew 1:18-25, covering Joseph’s reaction to the news of Jesus’ conception by the Holy Spirit and the birth of Jesus.
For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. ~ 1 Corinthians 2:2
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. ~ Matthew 1:18
… Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah. ~ Matthew 1:16
“who was found to be” εὑρίσκω heuriskó
To find something, to learn something, to discover something hidden, especially after searching.
And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. ~ Matthew 1:19
But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, BECAUSE He will save His people from their sins.” ~ Matthew 1:20-21
THE HEBREW WORD PLAY OF MATTHEW 1:21
Yeshua = Yahweh Saves or Yahweh is salvation or just Salvation itself.
Yoshia = shall save.
Yisra’el = the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. “His People”
Yeshua Yoshia Yisra’el = Jesus will save Israel.
THREE KEY THEMES OF MATTHEW’S GOSPEL
1) Jesus is the promised Messiah.
2) Jesus is the ultimate authoritative prophet and teacher, in line with Moses but even greater than Moses.
3) Jesus IS God in the flesh. He is Emmanuel – which means God With Us.
Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.” ~ Matthew 1:22-23
παρθένος ~ parthenos (par-then’-os
עַלְמָה ~ almah
“virgin” or “young woman”
IMMANUEL which means: Meth hemon ho Theos
Literally, “with us, THE God.”
And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. ~ Matthew 1:24-25
Joseph believed what he had been told by God. He accepted this miraculous, seemingly impossible, thing was true, and he acted upon what God told him to do, in faith that it would all work out according to God’s plan.
… that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and exist … ~ Acts 17:27-28
All we have to do is SEEK for Him, GROPE for Him, DESIRE to see Him, SEEK, KNOCK, ASK. He is not far from any one of us. That’s because, as Paul indicates, all of creation already exists WITHIN God.
You have turned my mourning into dancing for me; You have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever. ~ Psalm 30:11-12.
