How many of you, when were a kid, you hoped to be rich when you grew up? In this series, Pastor Greg wants us to realize that, as Christians, and especially as American Christians, we ARE rich in many different ways. This series focuses on teaching that instead of trying to GET rich financially, we must realize that we already ARE rich financially AND with God’s help we can ALSO be rich in what matters most.
This week is PART FOUR. Pastor G is talking about being rich in GOOD DEEDS!
… From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more. ~ Luke 12:48b
Another way we remember this teaching by Jesus is, “To whom much is given, much is required.”
Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. ~ 1 Timothy 6:17-19
Again, as we’ve said in previous weeks God gave you nice things for your enjoyment! It’s okay to do nice things for yourself and for your family. We just don’t want to stop there. We don’t want to ONLY do things for ourselves with out wealth. That’s important to remember because when you get rich, it’s easier to start being more “self-centered” than “others centered.”
God has blessed me with more than I need. I am rich. But I will not trust in riches but in Him who richly provides. Because I have more, I will give more AND LET’S ADD TODAY and I will do more.
We’re not saved BY good works but we ARE transformed by God TO DO good works.
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. ~ Ephesians 2:8-10
Three Principals About Being Rich In Good Deeds
1) My good deeds should always point to God and never to me.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. ~ Matthew 5:14-16
I guarantee you, MOST people don’t remember MOST of what I say on Sunday mornings or Wednesday night. If I quizzed you about what I spoke on a month ago you won’t remember 90% of it. But if I DO something kind or you, you will remember that all your life.
2) My good deeds must help others in the way they need it, not in the way I want to give it.
You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. ~ Acts 10:38
Like Jesus, we also always going to go the extra mile.
Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. ~ Matthew 5:41
A Roman soldier had the legal authority to order anyone to carry their gear for one mile. In my daily stepping goal of 22,500 steps, I’ve learned a mile for me is about 2,200 steps but back then, a Roman mile happened to be 1,000 paces and a pace was two steps. So when you walked 2,000 steps, you had fulfilled your duty. Jesus was saying, don’t just go the required one mile when someone asks you or orders you to help. Glorify God by going two miles just to bless someone else.
3) My good deeds must glorify God through His church.
Let’s hold firmly to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let’s consider how to encourage one another in love and good deeds, not abandoning our own meeting together, as is the habit of some people, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. ~ Hebrews 10:23-25
I believe, with all my heart, that through Christ, the local church is the hope of the world. And you,as a Christian, have, within you, spiritual gifts, every single one of you, that God wants to be used IN His church, FOR His church, and THROUGH His church. The local church, when it is done right, the local church, not any government, but the local church is the BEST organization to meet the needs of people in the world.
And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all. For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales and lay them at the apostles’ feet, and they would be distributed to each to the extent that any had need. ~ Acts 4:33-35
NO needy persons among them!!!! Can you imagine? What if every Christian in the world recognized how rich we are, and decided to become rich in Good Deeds? We could make it so there were no needy persons anywhere on the entire planet!!!! When the church acts like the church, because God has blessed us with more than we need, we are rich. We don’t trust in our riches but in Him who richly provides. Because we have more, we will give more and do more and that’s how to be rich at what matters most. That’s the kind of church that we can be for the glory of God.
