We’re in a 10-part Wednesday night series right now all based on the amazing word Kaleo. In Greek it means to call to someone with your voice, to call them to action or an office or to a purpose. In ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i – the Hawaiian language – it is a male name that is translated as “the voice” or “the sound” in English. Isn’t it interesting that both languages spell the word the same, pronouns the word in similar ways and they both have to do with a voice or a call to action.
Tonight pastor Greg wraps up part nine of ten with the first half of the Fifth Kaleo of Akua. We are Called to Holiness.
This week and next week we will see that We Are Called To BE HOLY!
As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” – 1 Peter 1:14-16
Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. ~ Hebrews 12:14
Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. – Victor Hugo
Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. – Plato
Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth; Break forth and sing for joy and sing praises. – Psalm 98:4
God loves music! God created music! In fact, our God is a great singer!
The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love He will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” ~ Zepheniah 3:17
The first song in Scripture appears in Exodus 15 and the last song can be found in Revelation 15. And both have as the shared focus of praising the holiness of God.
I will sing to the Lord, for He is highly exalted. Both the horse and the driver He has hurled into the sea. – Exodus 15:1
Who among the gods is like You, Lord? Who is like You—majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders? – Exodus 15:11
And I saw what looked like a sea of glass glowing with fire and, standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious over the beast and its image and over the number of its name. They held harps given them by God and sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb: “Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the nations. Who will not fear you, Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed. – Revelation 15:2-4
DOUBLE FOCUS OF “HOLY” – The first one this week.
- HOLY: To be holy is to be distinct, separate, UNIQUE!
This is connected to the word sanctity or sanctify or sanctified or sacred. They all mean to be set apart from non-holy things. To be totally different, wholly other, than everything else surrounding you. So when we say God is holy, we’re not just talking about one characteristic out of many about God; we’re talking about the very character, the very nature of God Himself. Holiness, when applied to God, means that He is utterly unique! He is incomparable, matchless, without parallel and without peer.

When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last…” – Revelation 1:17
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” – Proverbs 9:10a
” . . . You thought that I was just like you; I will reprove you and state the case in order before your eyes. Now consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you in pieces, and there will be none to deliver.” – Psalm 50:21b-22
For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. – Deuteronomy 4:24
