MESSAGE NOTES
Today’s ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i word is Hoaloha. It’s actually a contraction of the word hoa which means friend or companion and the word aloha which often means love but literally means I share my breath or spirit or life with you. Alo means I share —ha means – life, breath or spirit. So, Hoaloha refers to a beloved friend or a beloved companion that I share my life, breath or spirit with. Isn’t that a beautiful thought?
This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My friends IF you do what I command you. ~ No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. ~ John 15:12-15
אָהַב ~ aheb (HEBREW) To love or to befriend. In this context, Abraham was the beloved friend of God.
and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God. ~ James 2:23 (Quoting 2 Chronicles 20:7)
φίλος ~ philos (GREEK) which means beloved, dear, friendly, a friend. A beloved friend.
Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. ~ Exodus 33:11a
רֵעַ ~ rea (HEBREW) which means friend or companion, carrying with it the feeling of dearness. A dear friend. A beloved friend.
You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. This I command you, that you love one another. ~ John 15:16-17
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. ~ John 13:34
ἀγάπη ~ agapé which also means “to love” and is often associated with the purest form of unselfish love exhibited by God. It still carries with it the idea of true friendship, partnership. Again, a dearly beloved friend, hoaloha.
Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. ~ John 15:13
A man of too many friends comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. ~ Proverbs 18:24
He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm ~ Proverbs 13:30
Do not associate with a man given to anger; or go with a hot-tempered man, or you will learn his ways and find a snare for yourself. ~ Proverbs 22:24-25
A friend loves at all times, and a relative is born to help in adversity. ~ Proverbs 17:17
