Each week, Pastor G writes a short devotional blog on the church website that is based on a different Hawaiian Word each week. Then he writes a longer message devotional to deliver on Wednesday nights.
Today’s ‘Olelo Hawai’i word is Kōkua.
It means to help, to give aid or to give assistance.
Therefore….. Philippians 2:1a
Whenever you see the word therefore in Scripture you have to stop and ask: “What’s that therefore there, for?” We have to drop back and see what Paul just wrote prior to this therefore.
Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ … ~ Philippians 1:27a
Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
~ 2 Corinthians 5:20
… so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; ~ Philippians 1:27b
in no way alarmed by your opponents—which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. ~ Philippians 1:28
For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, experiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear to be in me. ~ Philippians 1:27-30
… we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. ~ Romans 5:3-5
So, with ALL OF THAT in Philippians 1 in mind, back to the Scripture we started with this week, Philippians 2. THEREFORE, because of everything else I just said …
Therefore, if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. ~ Philippians 2:1-4
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! ~ Philippians 2:5-8
