Today’s ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi word is Malama! Malama refers to caring for or preserving or protecting something or someone. Often in Hawaiʻi you will hear someone say “Malama Aina!” This expresses a desire to care for, protect and preserve the Hawaiian lands. I’ll talk more about the aina in tomorrow’s post.
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. ~ 1 Peter 5:6-7
God Is All About Malama
Today’s Scripture verse is a key verse at Waikoloa Community Church. This is where our catchphrase, Because He Cares, comes from. Think about that for a moment! Akua (God) is always about malama when it comes to you. Isn’t it a great feeling to stop and realize that the Creator of the Universe cares for you? The Greek word translated “cares” in that passage is a similar sounding word, “melo!” And it can also be understood as “to take an interest in” something. That certainly applies to our Hawaiian word malama as well. Since it is an active word, not a passive word it requires intentional action on our part. Our God, takes an active interest in you and in everything you do. If it matters to you, it matters to God! And He will always act in your best interests to preserve, protect and care for you.
Nothing Is Too Small For God
Sometimes we think God has “much bigger fish to fry” than to spend time worrying about our spat with a friend or concern over our higher than usual electric bill. The Bible makes it clear though that God really is deeply and personally concerned about caring for you. Furthermore, Akua wants us to malama for His creation as well with the same commitment He shows to us. Who are the people and places and things Akua has placed in your life right now that you can take a more active interest in? You can make a big difference in someone’s life when you take an active interest. So, remember, “The smallest good deed always outweighs the greatest good intention!” Prayerfully decide now to malama a specific person or place that God brings to your heart right now.
I’ll give everything I’ve got to help you become
everything that God has called and created you to be!
Aloha! (I share my life’s breath with you!)
